OUR SERVICES
VOCATIONAL EVALUATION
Vocational Evaluation has been described as a process that systematically uses work, either real or simulated, as the focal point for assessment and vocational exploration. A Vocational Evaluation uses both real work experience plus psychometric testing instruments to provide information useful in identifying potentially suitable employment/training options including:
· Transferable skills
· Vocational interests
· Work aptitudes and abilities
· Worker characteristics and behaviours
· Academic abilities and potential
The Sair Centre of Learning has staff experienced in the administration and interpretation of assessment tools. Our primary assessment instrument is the Valpar Aviator system, a validated, computer-based career assessment and planning system
- uses the same system as the U.S. Department of Labor to analyze jobs
-
measures both academic skills and aptitudes in key work-related areas
-
provides two pictorial interest surveys
Aviator allows job matching to be based on areas of interest, academic skills, aptitudes, or a combination of these.
Work-related habits, attitudes and behaviours are evaluated during the community-based Work Assessment.
COMMUNITY-BASED WORK ASSESSMENTS
The 18 day Work Assessment which, after a 3 day in-house orientation, takes place in the community with an employer partner, provides an opportunity for participants to explore and identify employment skills, interests and existing or potential barriers to paid employment.
Assessments may be full or part time, with a minimum of 15 hours per week. The Work Assessment, which may take place alone or as part of a more comprehensive, formal, Vocational Evaluation, provides information for development of a Work Training plan, as well as for longer term employment and/or educational planning.
Prior to commencing the Work Assessment, the Employment Training Specialist will also assist the client in creating/updating a resume, practicing for job interviews, and addressing other basic job search skills as appropriate.
EMPLOYMENT SERVICES
The Sair Centre provides a wide range of services designed to assist clients in developing skills and aptitudes identified during the assessment process, and/or addressing any identified barriers to successful employment. These may include individual and/or small group activities, as well as community-based Work Experiences and Job Shadows.
JOB SEARCH SERVICES
Sair Centre of Learning is not an Employment Agency. We do not find people jobs. However, through our Job Finders Group we will support participants in their active job search efforts by revising their resumes, helping them create cover letters, and preparing for job interviews. We will also provide access to essential job search tools like the internet, fax, and email at no charge. We will help participants in developing and maintaining a job search plan, share with them any appropriate job leads which come to our attention, and help them in identifying potential employers in their fields.
EMPLOYMENT SUPPORT SERVICES
For those participants who may benefit from more intensive support when entering a Work Experience or paid employment, Employment Support Services may be provided. These services may involve assisting the client in acquiring the skills necessary to obtain or maintain a job, emotional support during initial adjustment to the workplace, or assistance in problem-solving on–the-job issues.
When clients have obtained paid employment, ongoing support is available to assist them in developing or continuing those behaviours necessary for maintenance of employment over the long term, and to address any issues arising as they continue to adjust to the workplace. Support is automatic for the first 12 weeks of employment, and may be continued as negotiated by the participant and the referring counselor. Based upon individual planning and client preference, services may be provided on or off the work site.
